子供英語 英会話講師/English Teacher for Kids

  I'm an English conversation instructor.  My students are from 1-year-old baby to high school students and their mothers. I've been in this job for over 4 years. Sometimes I spend a hard time preparing for lessons, but generally,  I enjoy the lessons with my students.

The other day, I got a mail from a person who got concerned with my job. She said in her letter she happened to have a chance to teach kids English as a volunteer work but she couldn't do well. So she seemed to lose confidence in teaching them.

Well, there're many female people who want to be back in the workforce after finishing the first stage of raising children. If you were good at English during your student years, I think an English instructor for kids can be one more choice you can make.

And after you take the opportunity, you're expecting "the first lesson"!

I can tell you it becomes a tough experience for you.  It must be so tough and sometimes severe that you may lose your confidence just like her who gave me a mail.

But don't get depressed!  I want to say "Don't worry" to those who had a bitter experience.  At the very first lesson, everyone may feel bad. At least, every instructor I know said they felt so nervous and that they gave a terrible lesson to their students.

I'm no exception. My first lesson was far from good one. And after coming back home, I suddenly developed a fever! It's no joke.

So don't worry about your first experience. Every active instructor must have a quite similar experience with you. You don't need to lose your confidence at all.

And if you have another chance to give children lessons, try to "enjoy yourself" with them.  "Enjoy yourself", this is the key to success.

私は子供英会話講師をやっています。それに興味を持ったという女性からメールをいただきました。ボランティアとして子供に英語を教える機会があったのだけれど、そのレッスンがあまりにひどく、どうやら自信をなくされているように思われました。

育児が一段落して仕事に復帰しようと考えたとき、英語が得意であったなら「子供英語先生」は立派な選択肢の一つになります。人それぞれいろいろな道を通ってこの仕事につくのでしょうが、就任が決まると「初めてのレッスン」が待ってます。これが大変！　私は断言しますよ、とても大変だし、ときに自分が自信をなくすほどシビアなものになるであろうことを。

でも心配は無用です。最初のレッスンなんてそんなもんです。少なくとも私の仲間の現役講師は皆そう言いますし、私だって例外じゃありません。最初のレッスンが大変だったせいか知りませんが、家に帰った後、なんと、熱を出したほどですから！

子供英語先生を目指す方にアドバイスをするとすれば、とにかく子供たちと一緒に「自分が楽しむ」ということに尽きます。「自分‘も’」ではなく「自分‘が’楽しむ」というところがミソでしょうか。まちがっても「英語を教えてあげるんだ」スタンスはやめましょう。それは先生としてのキャリアがつけば、自然と考えるようになります。だって一生懸命に自分についてきてくれる子供とそのお母さんたちに、もっともっと英語ができるように、わかるようにしてあげたいと思わずにいられなくなりますから。
